Is it too long?

The overskirt, I mean. I'm not sure. It doesn't feel too long and the pictures look sort of ok. But then I'm only 160cm tall (5'3'') and I'm wondering if it'll look too heavy.
Ignore the red ribbon, I only wanted to try the front gather and haven't yet found a ribbon to match the fabric.

The skirt is finished, sans trims (which I still need to attach and finish pleating).  I think I'll add another tier of trims on the hem. Also, I think I need to add some sort of ties to the skirt, to tie it back against my legs; now it's a bit too voluminous, even though I do like it that way too. I wanted to try the overskirt on with the skirt to adjust the lenght and the waist and to see if I need more trim on the hem of the skirt. I do.

A bit wonky here, it's just pinned on. the white bit at the hem is the lining of the overskirt back piece, it won't show once I've hemmed it and put on the trims.
The skirt without trims

Before I put in the placket to hide the closure gap. I made a little train on the skirt :)

Mock-up overskirt, I still wonder if this would be a better shape and length.

  1. Not too long! The narrow line on your mock up oveskirt is lovely, but once you tie back the current overskirt, it will look perfect.
You are making wonderful progress! So fast!

    1. Thanks for your comment! I'll try the ties, I didn't really think that I could have them on the overskirt, so thanks for pointing it out :) I'm such a newbie with the late Victorian fashion... Do you think that the actual skirt would need ties too?
The mock-up skirt line is nice, but actually it's only an uncut piece of fabric I'm holding to my waist. I don't think I'd be able to sit in a skirt that narrow :)
I've been using the sewing machine quite a lot for this dress, hence the speed. I think I'll make the bodice by hand, though, and all the finicky details too.

    2. I usually have ties on both. At least one tie around knee level. The underskirt might work without but I think it looks better pulled back when worn with a narrow overskirt. And sometimes the overkirt can benefit from several sets of ties to hold it evenly from around hip level to the hem.

  2. I would say it would look better slightly shorter.
Its interesting to see the skirt both with and without overskirt. I'm making myself a bustle outfit and wondered how it all worked (I think I need to add a ruffle on the hem). How is the overskirt attached to the underskirt? Is it seperate waistband or hooked/buttoned onto the underskirt?

    1. I think I'll make a separate waistband for the overskirt, haven't really decided yet. Thanks for your comment!

  4. I think a little shorter on the overskirt would suit your proportions and height perfectly. It's looking lovely!

    1. Thank you! I think I'll shorten it a little from the waist edge and try the ties that were suggested.
